The science behind Svetol™

Clinically proven results for weight management

Coffee is the primary dietary source of chlorogenic acids – phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties and the ability to reduce glucose uptake.¹ Roasted coffee, which we consume most, is lower in chlorogenic acids than green coffee. Research shows that a daily 400 mg dose of Svetol™, our green coffee extract rich in chlorogenic acids and supported by patents, is an effective solution for weight management.

Research explaining Svetol’s™ mechanisms of action

There is a growing body of research explaining Svetol’s™ mechanisms of action. While the research was done ex vivo, it suggests the following mechanisms of action:

  • Inhibition of the glucose-6-phosphatase activity, an hepatic enzyme involved in the glucose release from glycogen storage in the liver into blood circulation; this forces lipids to be used as energy to compensate for the decrease in glucose release from glycogenolysis.⁸
  • Stimulation of  the release of free fatty acids from human adipocytes (fat cells); thus reducing the adipocyte cell volume, which is defined as a "fat burning" action..⁹

Unique chlorogenic acids profile

We use a proprietary process to deliver a green coffee extract standardised to the unique fingerprint of the key active compounds in Svetol™ – chlorogenic acids with patented weight-management activity. Research indicates that chlorogenic acids may be responsible for the already well-known beneficial effects of coffee on glucose (blood sugar) modulation.³

Svetol™’s chlorogenic acid profile is unique compared to generic green coffee bean extracts, and is protected by two patents. It’s further supported by synergistic active compounds, including polyphenols and 5-caffeoylquinic acid, to support weight management.¹

Several other relevant mechanisms of action have been identified for chlorogenic acids.

The original green coffee extract, with scientific studies

Svetol™’s extensive published research includes:

  • 3 clinical studies for weight management¹ ⁴ ⁵
  • 3 bioavailability studies showing that the active compounds - chlorogenic acids - are well absorbed by the body⁶
  • 2 studies⁸ describing the mechanisms of action:
    • Indirect stimulation of fat use as an energy source: Inhibits the liver enzyme involved in the release of glucose from glycogen stores. This will stimulate the use of lipids to be used as energy.⁸
    • Direct stimulation of fatty acids release from fat stores, which is defined as having a ‘fat burning’ action.⁹

In a gold-standard randomised, double-blind controlled trial of 50 overweight participants¹, supplementing with 400 mg per day of Svetol™ for 60 days before meals and a low caloric diet resulted in a significant:

  • Decrease in body weight vs. placebo (4.97 kg (5.7%) versus 2.45 kg (2.9%) ; P<0.001)
  • Decrease in BMI vs. placebo (1.9 versus 0.9 kg/m²; P<0.001)
  • Increase in the ratio of lean mass to fat mass vs. placebo (4.1 versus 1.6%; P<0.01)

Recognised effects on weight and cardiovascular health

The wealth of research into the benefits of Svetol™ has earned it two health claims from Health Canada:²

“Could be a complement to a healthy lifestyle that incorporates a calorie-reduced diet and regular physical activity for individuals involved in a weight management program.”

“Helps support cardiovascular health.”
